- EMDRFree by the Sea offers eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence based therapy for trauma victims. EMDR therapy is empirically supported through 30+ studies, providing evidence for the decrease of intense negative feelings that occur due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Free by the Sea offers EMDR therapy in individual sessions with a licensed mental health counselor trained specifically in this therapy method. The client will be evaluated to determine if EMDR therapy is the appropriate treatment method for your healing process.
- DBTFree by the Sea offers dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) for addiction recovery; a treatment modality that has proven to be effective for the treatment of addiction. DBT provides copings skills through four main pillars: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Free by the Sea offers DBT skills training in individual and group therapy settings and provides ongoing support in skills application.
- Residential TreatmentResidential treatment is generally considered the highest standard of care. Patients live at the facility and participate in many different evidence-based therapies and activities that help them recover. Residential treatment aims to remove someone from their addiction routine and rebuild their day-to-day life with structured, sober life skills. The typical length of stay in residential treatment is between 21-28 days before making a transition to a lower level of care.
- Partial HospitalizationPartial Hospitalization (PHP) serves as a bridge between residential treatment and intensive outpatient (IOP). PHP offers a minimum of 20 hours of evidence-based therapies and activities to support a transition back into your new life of recovery. Free by the Sea provides sober living accommodations along with PHP programming 5 days per week. This program structure facilitates ongoing support and accountability, preparing for a further step down in level of care. The duration of PHP is based on your individual needs, but often ranges from 3-5 weeks.
- Intensive OutpatientIntensive outpatient (IOP) provides clients with an opportunity to continue to integrate back into their lives while also maintaining the support and structure needed in early recovery. IOP consists of a minimum of 9 hours of evidence-based treatment per week along with providing sober living accommodations. This structure allows for the balance of a recovery program while working, attending school, spending time with family, or other activities of this nature. The time spent in IOP will be dependent on your individual needs, but often ranges from one to six months of treatment.
- 12-stepFree by the Sea recognizes the importance of self-help support, while also realizing a “one size fits all” method is not effective. We believe it is important to offer a variety of options for self-help support including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Celebrate Recovery, Refuge Recovery, The Red Road to Wellbriety, SMART Recovery, Alanon, among others. Continuing with self-help support groups is vital for many when creating a plan for long term recovery, so we strive to provide resources that will meet your individual needs.
- Psychiatric ServicesFree by the Sea offers psychiatric services, as we understand the importance of treating mental health in addiction recovery. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on the treatment and prevention of mental and behavioral disorders. What makes psychiatry unique is that a psychiatrist is qualified to treat both the physical and mental problems a person may have. This becomes extremely beneficial and useful in an addiction setting. Addiction affects both the body and the mind, so having a professional who can help with both facets is very important.
- Dual Diagnosis/Co-OccurringOften individuals find themselves suffering from substance abuse in addition to mental illness. Treating both the addiction and the mental health disorder at the same time increases the chance for a healthy and productive life that is substance-free. Treating both illnesses is a vital part of the path of recovery. Dual diagnosis treatment is available for anyone seeking assistance in managing addiction along with a mental health disorder. Free by the Sea has licensed mental health counselors on site, providing therapy in both individual and group settings.
- CBTCognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach the seeks to change the way recovering individuals thinks. CBT works to address harmful thoughts and behaviors and replacing them with effective thoughts and behaviors. CBT has been proven to be effective at treating addiction, by addressing the root causes of the substance use behaviors. Free by the Sea offers CBT in both group therapy and individual therapy.

Meet the Staff
Dr. Richard CrabbeMedical DirectorDr. Richard Crabbe joined our team in 2019 as our psychiatrist. He attended the University of Ghana Medical School where he became a Medical Doctor in 1977. From 1978 through 1984, he was a medical officer in the Ghana Navy and provided a variety of services from general medicine to surgeries. Dr. Crabbe’s vast education includes studies in England, New York, and Nebraska. He received his Certificate in General Psychology from the American Board of Psychology and Neurology in 2002. Dr. Crabbe is married with two children and enjoys music, reading and chi gong ( an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique).
Kayla HernandezClinical DirectorKayla has served at Free by the Sea since 2017. She has served in a variety of roles including starting out as a residential substance use disorder counselor, supervising the partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, and currently holds the position of the substance use clinical director and oversees the FBTS program across all levels of care. Kayla obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology and received training in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Kayla loves working in the addiction recovery field and is honored to be part of the healing and recovery process.
Jan KaschmitterMental Health DirectorJan Kaschmitter has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor since 2001. She has been an Approved Clinical Supervisor and clinical department manager in previous positions prior to coming to Free by the Sea where she is currently the Mental Health Clinical Supervisor. Jan has experience with individual, family, and couples counseling with specialized training in addictions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, and anger management. She is currently working on credentialing as a gambling counselor. Jan has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Washington University and prefers to work in a co-occurring setting.
Robyn MartySubstance Use Disorder CounselorRobyn is a SUDP in addiction in the state of Washington, and a CADC II in addiction in Oregon. She has thirty plus years in drug counseling, and case management. Robyn has a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and will obtain her Master of Science in Professional Counseling this fall.

ABOUT FREE BY THE SEA
Located in Ocean Park, Washington, Free by the Sea is a residential treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction. The facility is also approved by the State of Washington to provide treatment for dual diagnosis services. It's one of 139 treatment facilities in Washington (35.1 percent of all facilities in the state) to offer specialized programming for clients with co-occurring disorders. Although medically supervised detox is not available on-site, the facility will recommend a nearby detox facility before undergoing residential treatment as needed.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment starts with a thorough assessment to determine the appropriate level of care. Treatment length varies and can be either 30, 60, or 90 days. Free by the Sea is one of only 33 treatment facilities in Washington (just 8.3 percent of all facilities) to offer long-term residential programs lasting longer than 30 days. Programming is largely gender specific, and men and women participate in eating, classes, and most other treatment activities separately.
Treatment is evidence-based and includes dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is a treatment modality offered by 54.3 percent of Washington treatment facilities. Clients attend individual and group therapy, life skills education classes, anger management workshops, and 12-step groups.
Upon successful completion of the treatment program, clients receive an individual discharge plan based on the client's unique needs. Clients may live on campus for up to one year after program completion for transitional care.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to the facility's website, the facility maintains a low client-to-staff ratio. The treatment team includes psychiatrists, licensed social workers, psychiatric nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, an addictionologist, and other behavioral health staff.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The facility is located on a five-acre campus on the coast of Washington. Family visitation takes place on Sunday afternoons. Meals are provided by the facility at regularly scheduled times.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The two former clients polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Free by the Sea positive feedback. Both indicated that the treatment was effective, and one gave the facility five out of five stars for its cleanliness, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and its staff's level of training and experience. The other alum, J.B., wrote: "Great staff, comfortable, the services and groups and classes are great. Lots of one on one care."
The rehab also fared well on secondary sites, where it earned an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars based on 67 Google reviews[1] and a 4.7 out of five star rating based on the opinions of 47 individuals on Facebook, which the facility mau manage[2]. FINANCING
According to the facility's website, Free by the Sea accepts a wide range of private health insurance plans, including Providence Health Plan, First Choice Health, and Aetna, among others. Private pay options are also available.
