Did You Know?

In America, 2.8 million people over the age of 12 admitted to abusing MDMA at least once in 2009, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse.

Ecstasy, also known as MDMA, is a stimulant that works similarly to methamphetamine. It causes the brain to produce serotonin, which is a chemical that regulates a person’s mood, sexual activity, sensitivity to pain, aggression, and sleep. If Ecstasy is taken, it is possible to damage the nerves that store serotonin, which makes it difficult for the body to replace the serotonin used. This makes it hard for the user who is addicted to Ecstasy or MDMA and alcohol to:

  • Learn
  • Sleep
  • Remember
  • Maintain a positive mood

Serotonin is a chemical in the brain that must be available to produce positive moods.

Like methamphetamine, Ecstasy causes the brain to release dopamine as well. This gives a user pleasure while taking the drug and causes the user to be cranky and depressed when the drug wears off. The body cannot replace the used chemicals as quickly as Ecstasy causes them to be released, which leads to the dramatic change in mood and aggression after the drug wears off. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of Ecstasy use, call your healthcare provider. Some side effects of Ecstasy can be life-threatening issues that need immediate attention. If a person taking Ecstasy passes out or is not breathing, call 911.

During the time a person takes Ecstasy, the body’s temperature rises and the heart rate increases as well. In warm or hot conditions, like those found at parties or in clubs, this can lead to a person becoming dehydrated and can cause heatstroke, which can cause death if not treated. With alcohol added to the mixture, the risk for dehydration is increased. This can cause fatal events to be more common than when Ecstasy is taken alone.

Alcohol depresses the central nervous system. This causes users to have a lack of mental clarity, slower reaction times, a decrease in muscle coordination, and other side effects. Combined with Ecstasy, a user may not realize how intoxicated he or she really is. This can lead to overdosing and additional problems with dehydration, overheating, and death. Combining alcohol with other drugs can lead to coma or death because the user may not feel as intoxicated as he or she is due to the side effects canceling each other out.
