In 2016, California became 1 of the 9 states in the United States to allow recreational use of marijuana. Through CA Proposition 64, individual cities can now control how recreational marijuana is produced, sold, and possessed; however, some cities have opted not to allow recreational use of this drug, and some metro areas have even banned the sale and use of medical marijuana.1
Alhambra, California, remains on the fence about the substance.2 Alhambra is a city in Los Angeles County of less than 90,000 residents, and it is one of 10 cities that has not passed regulations on recreational marijuana use, so it is unclear if the drug is technically legal in the area.3 These 10 cities together represent about 7% of Los Angeles County’s population.2
Legalizing marijuana allows states to have more control over this drug, much like they have control over alcohol or tobacco sales. It is important to remember that, just because marijuana is popular and becoming legal in many states around the U.S., that does not mean it is safe to consume it. Recent studies suggest that 30% of people who use marijuana regularly have a form of addiction to, or dependence on, the drug.4
