  • Cody Desmond
    Cody DesmondProgram Director
My name is Cody Desmond, I am 27 years old, and I was born and raised in Gloucester, Massachusetts. I am also currently in long term recovery for the past 5 years. I struggled with addiction since I was 13 years old. During the beginning of my addiction, I was expelled from my public high school my freshman year. I eventually enrolled in Northshore Recovery High School in 2007 at the age of 14. I was in and out of treatment centers while I was struggling with my opiate addiction for the next 8 years up until the age of 22. I knew I wanted to work in the addictions field during my time at Recovery High School. I have witnessed and experienced on a first hand basis the destruction and devastation that substance use disorders and mental health inflicts on individuals and families. After years of abuse, trauma, and deaths of loved ones is when I realized that I wanted to be the bright light for someone, or even just a glimmer of hope for those that are still in the fog of addiction; to try to guide them out, as someone was for me in my darkest of days. I began working in the addictions field as an intern with the Gloucester Health Department as a senior in high school in 2010. I then worked at the Danvers CAB methadone clinic at the age of 18. After sustaining my recovery, I worked in various treatment settings ranging from inpatient and outpatient care, detoxes, adolescent programs, and also practiced peer to peer recovery coaching for the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (P.A.A.R.I.) out of Lynn Police Department’s Behavioral Health Unit. I then started working as a behavioral health technician for an Addiction Treatment Center in July of 2018. I worked as a BHT for 6 months until I was promoted to a case manager in January of 2019. In January 2020 I was promoted to Director of Administration. My goal is to give them the greatest chance of recovery upon completion from our program. We are all able to relate, empathize, and understand exactly what our clients are going through which helps builds connections, relationships, and trust. But what makes Aftermath stand out most is that this is not just our job or our career; it’s our life. The foundation of my approach is simple: using love, support, guidance, and experience as the underlying treatment for this disease. Aftermath is a family, and you feel the love each and every day; whether you are a current client, alumni, a staff member, or even a member of the communities that surround us.
