Unlike the broader culture, which tends to be mechanistic, we at Harmony Place Monterey believe that healthcare needs to be personal, compassionate, and each individual requires a total commitment from their clinician. We begin the process with a complete assessment, since often the symptoms of depression, anxiety or addiction, are only the tip of the iceberg. The symptom can be the result of a complexity of developmental factors from the past resulting in the difficulties of the present. Our first focus is relief of the symptom, using all the tools available, including medication and physical health assessment, psychotherapy, life-coaching, relationship and family work, lifestyle and work issues identification, and an understanding of a client’s social interactions and friends. We find that intensive-focused therapy, daily for a brief period, is more effective when an individual has suffered for a prolonged period. We work with many individuals who have tried multiple therapies for many years but have had minimal relief. When focusing on therapy for six hours a day, six days a week in a retreat-like setting, clients can resolve childhood traumas, restructure life goals, get resolution on conflictual relationships, and develop skills to recreate life passions. When a major psychiatric illness is blocking the client’s path, the most critical intervention is finding the right medications, with an optimal dosage and minimal side effects. With literally 50 or more alternatives to medicine, finding the right fit for the individual, is an art. Being in an intensive daily format allows for continual monitoring, lab testing, and the ability to change what is needed.
