- Client & Family Support GroupsGroup therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.
- Family ProgramResearch shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
- Medical DetoxificationDrugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.
- DetoxThough not all rehab facilities offer “medical detoxification,” all people with an addiction to drugs or alcohol will experience intense physical and emotional changes and discomfort as their bodies react to withdrawal of the addictive substance. Many people use the term “detox” to refer to the period of time (ranging from a few days to a week) when the body is reacting to an addict’s decision to stop using.
- Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders TreatmentThese two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
- Individualized TreatmentSome facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
- Individual TherapyThis term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.
- Aftercare SupportAddiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.
- Holistic TherapyFacilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.

Bob DwaberExecutive DirectorBob Dawber takes a vision and makes it a reality through sound strategy development. He sees the threads of opportunity that wind through an organization, brings them together into a coherent whole, and helps others extend their thinking. Bob is an inspirational leader who tells stories that inspire action while at the same time is grounded in the financial data of a business. Currently, Bob is the executive director of Serenity At Summit, a 61-bed addiction treatment and medical detox facility in Massachusetts. As the executive director of York County Shelter Programs, in Alfred, Maine, Bob led the multifaceted nonprofit human service agency out of a financial crisis that nearly crippled the organization. Earlier in his tenure, he was instrumental in facilitating the merger between York County Shelter Programs and Serenity House of Portland, ME. In the 35 years since, Bob has risen as a leader in several organizations. Bob holds an M.Ed. from Cambridge College and has served on several Boards of Directors and Committees, including the Massachusetts Committee on Human Rights, Maine Legislative Committee on the Affordable Care Act, Maine State Association of Substance Abuse Providers, Maine State Homeless Council, Maine Food Insecurity Committee.
Tiffany LeyneDetox ManagerTiffany Leyne has been a professional in the healthcare industry for over 7 years working for a national toxicology lab supporting pain management and substance abuse facilities in New England and across the country. Over the course of seven years, she has worked in many facets of the business such as customer service representative, field service manager, corporate trainer, and national substance abuse manager, where she traveled around the country to work with various types of substance abuse programs. This opportunity gave her exposure to many different types of treatment options for all levels of care. After a short hiatus from the field, Tiffany realized her intense drive and desire to make a difference was her true passion, and that is what brought her to Serenity at Summit New England.
Mary O'NeilTreatment ConsultantMary O’Neil is a marketing, public relations, and communications professional with over 20 years of experience. Prior to joining Summit Behavioral Health, O’Neil was a member of the senior leadership team at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill where she served as the director of marketing and public relations. She was later promoted to the northeast regional marketing director for Steward Health Care, the hospital’s parent company. In addition to a successful career in marketing and communications, O’Neil has held adjunct faculty positions at Northern Essex Community College and, most recently, at the Summerfuel Pre-College Program at Harvard where she teaches public speaking and debate. O’Neil is actively involved in her community and currently serves as the president of the board of directors for the Haverhill YMCA and as a member of the YMCAs of the North Shore corporate board of directors. In 2011, O’Neil was selected as a YWCA’s Woman of the Year and received the 2013 Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club of Haverhill. O’Neil holds a master’s degree in visual and media arts from Emerson College in Boston.

ABOUT SERENITY AT SUMMIT NEW ENGLAND
Serenity at Summit has five treatment facilities throughout New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Founded in 2015 and located in Haverhill, Mass., Serenity at Summit New England is one of the eight (2.3 percent) of Massachusetts treatment facilities that offers residential detox services. It also offers residential treatment and clinical stabilization services to individuals who are struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to Serenity at Summit's website, it offers a full range of services. Treatment typically begins with an initial assessment, which is used to create a customized treatment plan. Clients may undergo five to seven days of medically-supervised acute treatment services (ATS).
Each program offer individualized daily schedules that include mindful meditation sessions, check-ins, educational group, individual counseling sessions, group sessions, and 12-step meetings. Along with traditional treatment methods, the treatment provides holistic offerings for an additional prices such as meditation, nutritional assessments, reiki, yoga, and acupuncture.
The treatment team utilizes evidence-based medical treatment methods. During group therapy, clients work on emotional regulation, medical education, motivational enhancement, relapse prevention, the 12-steps of recovery, and wellness skills. Individual therapy may include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, family-focused therapy, and trauma-informed sessions.
The treatment team works with each client to help create an aftercare plan, which may include treatment at another Serenity at Summit facility.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
Serenity at Summit's website notes the treatment team includes therapists, nurse practitioners, and counselors. It is one of the 99 (28.2 percent) of Massachusetts treatment facilities that is accredited by The Joint Commission.

However, the six people to leave Google Reviews for Serenity at Summit New England to date gave an average of 3.7 out of five stars, and mixed feedback. Of the four individuals to leave commentary, two gave positive feedback, one offered a neutral perspective, and one person gave a negative review. [1]
