  • 12-Step

The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
  • SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program® helps people recover from all types of addictive behaviors, including: alcoholism, drug abuse, substance abuse, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction, and addiction to other substances and activities. SMART Recovery teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance, encourages individuals to recover and live satisfying lives, and teaches tools and techniques for self-directed change. Its meetings are educational and include open discussions. SMART Recovery advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments and evolves as scientific knowledge of addiction recovery evolves.

  • Maria Ortiz-Towner
Maria Ortiz-TownerLicensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist
Maria Ortiz-Towner is a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor. She has been in the addiction field doing inpatient and outpatient treatment since 1999. She has worked with adolescents, adult and families during this time. Maria started out early in her career as an Intensive Supervision Officer for adults in Johnson, Wyandotte and Sedgwick Counties. While doing this she realized that the majority of her clients were engaging in criminal activity in order to support their ever growing alcohol and drug habits. It was at that point that she decided to work on her Masters degree in Marriage and Family therapy. Shortly after graduation she went to work at Hutchinson Maximum Correctional Facility to do therapy with Sexual Offenders. Once again alcohol and drug addiction played a major role in these offenders acting out behaviors. As a result she tested out for her licensed clinical addiction counselor license and began to work in the addiction field. Maria went to work originally in an outpatient substance abuse program as the director of adolescent services. From there she opened up her own private private practice where she worked with individuals and families that suffered from both addiction and other mental health issues. After moving back to the Kansas City area Maria has worked at two different adult outpatient substance abuse treatment programs. While in these positions she has developed the treatment programs both in English and in Spanish. While here at Sunflower Wellness Retreat as the Lead Counselor she is reviewing and adding to an already excellent treatment program adding value to each and every session so as to insure that the clients are receiving the latest and best treatment information and therapy.

Very disappointed! I was told on the phone that I would have one-on-ones with my counselor. In 3 1/2 weeks I never had one, even after multiple requests. And being in a small room on a bunk bed with several other patients on bunk beds was terrible. It was NOTHING like I was told it would be when I called. A TOTAL waste of time and money!

I was disappointed. They advertise as the \"Premium\" treatment center in the Midwest but they are far from Premium. The groups were fine, the food was fine, but the facility was very very understaffed. I couldn\'t get any \"one-on-one\" meetings with my therapist like I was told. Also, there isn\'t enough space for the large number of patients they have packed in there.

My stay here was life changing. The staff is amazing, they really do make you feel apart of a family. Even our chef is outstanding and talks to us all. If you open your mind, listen, participate in groups and go to the meetings, it really does work and gives you a great sense of hope and accomplishment. I know I will cherish my stay here for the rest of my life. Truly am grateful for my stay at Sunflower.

I had a very good and positive experience here at Sunflower. The staff here is very accommodating and easy to get along with. As far as the counseling sessions, they where very on point and allot of interaction with other clients. I would highly recommend Sunflower anyone with alcohol or drug problems.
