Alcohol and Drug Addiction Helplines in California

An interesting fact about California helplines is that that’s where they originated from. The first telephone helplines in the United States were suicide prevention hotlines that appeared in 1959, in San Francisco. However, during the 1970s, it became evident that other vulnerable and sensitive population groups were also in need of this kind of service. That’s why this form of help started providing support to sexual assault victims, survivors of domestic and child abuse, the LGBTQ+ community, individuals with mental health issues, and, of course, people with substance abuse issues. The California hotlines were free, anonymous, and allowed callers to talk about anything that was on their minds without fear of consequences.1

Alcohol or drug addiction helpline remains an indispensable resource for substance abuse in California since thousands of lives are still being lost to opioid addiction. Between 2006 and 2017, more than half of all drug overdose deaths in LA County involved prescription drug abuse, more than 70% of which were prescription opioids.2 It’s estimated that 45% of drug overdose deaths in the state involved opioids in 2018, while deaths involving heroin continued to rise. These drug abuse statistics speak volumes about the California drug problem.3

Residents across the state can get access to substance abuse resources by calling one of the drug or alcohol CA addiction hotlines. These substance abuse hotlines will also take calls from individuals suffering from mental health issues. Even though substance abuse problems can happen in all age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds, in California they affect young adults (18 to 25 years old) at nearly twice the average rate. In the year 2013–2014, 10.4% of all adolescents reported using illicit drugs within the month before being surveyed.4

Among individuals aged 12 or older, only 7.2% of those dependent on alcohol received treatment for alcohol abuse, while 11.7% of those addicted to illicit drugs received treatment for their drug abuse (per year, from 2010 to 2014).4

What Are CA Addiction Hotline Services?

A California abuse hotline number is a phone number people can call to get help regarding their alcohol or drug abuse issues. Addiction helpline advisors provide general information about alcohol, drugs, and addiction, listen to callers’ problems and answer their questions. Well-trained CA hotline representatives can offer support and advice, share resources, and direct callers to best-suited treatment options, and local rehab facilities.5

California was the state with the largest numbers of both facilities and clients in addiction treatment for every odd year from 2007 through 2017. The SAMHSA’s 2017 N-SSATS report includes 1,311 California facilities, with a total of 118,607 clients in treatment. The number of clients in treatment under the age of 18 was 5,013.6

Types of care California clients were receiving was:6

  • Total outpatient: 104,972 clients, of which:
    • 48,501 and 8,361 in regular and intensive treatment respectively.
    • 3,170 in day treatment or partial hospitalization.
    • 1,755 in detox.
    • 43,185 on Methadone/Buprenorphine maintenance or Naltrexone treatment.
  • Residential (non-hospital): out of 13,020 clients in total
    • 2,758 were in short-term treatment.
    • 9,289 in long-term treatment.
    • 973 in detox.
  • Hospital inpatient: out of 615 patients in total, 253 were in detox.

The percentage of clients treated for both drug and alcohol abuse was 31.6 %, and 46.5% were diagnosed with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders.6

What Should I Ask When I Call a CA Substance Abuse Hotline?

When you decide to reach out for help, you probably already feel concerned about your substance abuse. However, some people might not be able to tell the difference between occasional use, abuse, and full-blown addiction. Knowledgeable hotline advisors can help you to sort out your thoughts on the matter and provide you with clear answers that will help you determine how serious your substance abuse is, whether you need professional help, and what kind. So, when you call a helpline you should get answers to some or all of these questions:7

Can I Call CA Drug Addiction Treatment Hotline for Someone Else?

Yes, and the same questions listed above are useful even if you’re calling for someone else whose drug or alcohol abuse you’re worried about. It doesn’t matter if it’s your partner, child, another member of your family or friend group, if you’re worried about them, you should call a helpline to get accurate information. Instead of trying to organize an intervention yourself,  try suggesting that they seek professional help, in a supportive, non-confrontational way.8

You also might want to ask about family counseling as it improves the odds of successful recovery as drug or alcohol addiction can be related to the family history of substance abuse, mental illness, or both.14

How Do I Know if I Should Call a CA Alcohol & Drug Addiction Hotline?

To decide whether you should call a helpline, consider whether you noticed a certain pattern of behavior (your own or someone else’s) involving drug or alcohol use despite the negative consequences. These may entail physical or mental health problems or neglecting work and family responsibilities.7

In these situations, it might be helpful to get educational information about substance abuse and advice from a knowledgeable, trained adviser. When you call a CA addiction or mental health hotline, a compassionate, non-judgmental advisor will know how to assess your situation and connect you to necessary resources, rehab centers, or experts who know how to help.7

Are CA Substance Abuse Hotlines Free and Confidential?

Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of addiction help hotlines. The point of this service is to help and give you the best possible advice, based on the information you choose to share. This way you can make an informed decision about what to do next. Your information is protected by law, so it can’t be collected or disclosed without your explicit permission.9

The California hotlines are also toll-free, so they can provide help to anyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status.10

What Happens When I Call a California Substance Abuse Hotline Number?

When you call a California substance abuse hotline number, a trained, well-educated advisor will ask you about your substance abuse or any other issues you might want to talk about. You don’t have to talk about anything you’re not comfortable with. You should also know that you are not committing to anything by calling a helpline. If all you want to do is talk, and have someone listen to your story, that’s fine.5

However, if you feel like it’s time to get some professional help, sharing some personal information will help the advisor evaluate your situation and guide you toward your next step. They may suggest other local resources, like a CA drug counseling or depression hotline, explain different types of therapy, direct you to nearby rehab centers, talk about what SUD treatment looks like, and what to expect during the initial steps and intake process.5

To help the hotline representative make a correct assessment you should consider answering these or similar questions:7

  • Are you currently in crisis or is your life in danger?
  • How old are you and where do you live?
  • What are the duration and severity of your addiction?
  • Do you have any mental health issues?
  • Do you feel ready and motivated to start substance abuse treatment?
  • Could you provide more details on your or a loved one’s substance abuse?
  • What kind of insurance do you have, if any?

Laguna Treatment Hospital

Among the leading treatment centers in California, the Laguna Treatment Hospital is located in the secluded setting of Aliso Viejo. This is Orange County’s first chemical dependency recovery hospital that specializes in medically monitored detox and inpatient rehabilitation, with private rooms available.

There are a few different options for inpatient/residential treatment. One of them is a short-term treatment that lasts 28 days. On the other hand, long-term treatment can last 60 days or, based on the severity of the addiction and each patient’s needs, 90-day treatment might be necessary for a full recovery. The center also offers outpatient services and dual-diagnosis treatment.14

Highly reputable rehab centers individualize each patient’s treatment according to their unique needs and circumstances. After a comprehensive patient assessment, they create tailored treatment plans, taking into consideration factors like age, lifestyle, underlying medical conditions, co-occurring mental health disorders, history of trauma, or religious beliefs. For example, there are specific treatment plans for groups like:14

Another essential component of high-quality addiction treatment is aftercare support (83.1% of CA rehab centers offer it)6. To ensure lasting recovery, patients may attend individual counseling sessions or group support meetings during and after treatment. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers use the 12-step model as a base for both their treatment and aftercare. Aftercare may also include arranging sober living options and transitional housing.14

If you call the Laguna Treatment Hospital and speak to their admissions navigator they can guide you through your treatment options and check your insurance coverage. If you prefer reaching out online, you can do it by filling out and submitting an online form. Another way to find out about your treatment options and insurance coverage is to contact your health insurance provider.
