Aetna Arizona: Rehab & Detox Centers in AZ That Take Aetna Insurance

Arizona is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States. Famous for the Grand Canyon, tourists and locals alike visit this wonder of the world every year. Though perhaps best known for its hot desert dotted with cacti, Arizona has the largest stand of evergreen ponderosa pine trees around the globe.1 The state’s largest cities include Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, and Scottsdale.1

Over 7 million people call Arizona home, but, unfortunately, many residents struggle with abuse and overuse of substances like drugs and alcohol.1 Addiction to drugs and/or alcohol is known as substance use disorder.

  • Nearly 5% of Arizona residents have alcohol use disorder (279,000 people).2, p 25
  • 8% of Arizona residents have substance use disorder (404,000 people).2, p 26
  • More than five people die every day in Arizona from an opioid overdose.3
  • Among Arizona residents enrolled in substance use treatment, 42.9% received treatment for a drug problem, 16.3% received treatment for an alcohol problem, and 40.9% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol abuse.2, p 28

Like in many other states, substance misuse is a public health issue in Arizona. The misuse of drugs and alcohol has a tremendous impact on individuals, families, and communities. Motor vehicle accidents, risky sexual behaviors, poisonings, and overdoses are some of the many consequences of substance abuse.4

It doesn’t have to be this way. Rehab facilities in Arizona and throughout the country can provide evidence-based treatments to help you or your family member overcome addiction and support your long-term sobriety.

How Much Does Aetna of Arizona Cover (Addiction Treatment)?

Banner|Aetna Arizona will provide at least partial coverage for most addiction treatments. Consider each of the following before choosing a treatment program:

  • The substance(s) you are misusing
  • How long you’ve been using
  • Whether you’ve gone to rehab in the past
  • If you want to live at home or at the treatment center
  • Whether you have other mental health conditions that require treatment

Addiction treatments Aetna may provide coverage for include:10

Medication-assisted detoxification. Drug and alcohol abuse can often lead to physical dependency. If you are physically dependent, your body will go through withdrawal symptoms when you stop. Medication-assisted detox uses prescription medications to help you safely withdraw from substances and reduce uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal. This is usually the first step in a person’s journey to recovery.

Inpatient/residential rehab. Inpatient rehab programs, also known as residential treatment, provide you with a place to live while you are going through treatment. Various therapies are provided, including group and individual therapy to help you understand addiction and learn healthy coping mechanisms to support your recovery. Psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety may also be addressed in an inpatient rehab program.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP). PHP programs allow you to live at home while in treatment. These programs are held during the daytime hours that last anywhere from 4-8 hours each day. These programs offer a high level of support to help you work through any stressors you experience while living at home and provide a supportive environment for you to learn how to cope and stay sober.

Outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs vary widely in terms of the required time commitment. You can live at home while in an outpatient program. Most take place in the evening hours, approximately 10-12 hours each week. These programs are often attended by those who have completed an inpatient rehab program and would like to receive ongoing support.

Intensive outpatient (IOP). IOP programs are time-intensive—they met 3-5 days a week for several hours at a time, typically in the evening hours. This program allows you to work and take care of family responsibilities during the day and attend your IOP program at night. In IOP you will receive peer and professional support as you navigate your recovery.

Does Aetna of Arizona Insurance Cover Mental Health Care?

Yes, Aetna Arizona will provide coverage for some, if not all, of any mental health treatments you receive. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that all insurance companies must provide at least partial coverage for mental health care.11

If you struggle with addiction and have a mental health condition it’s important to know that nearly 50% of all people with substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental health diagnosis, such as anxiety, ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. 12, 2nd para

Known as a dual diagnosis, people with mental illness are twice as likely to turn to drugs and alcohol to self-medicate, reduce their symptoms, and cope.13 If you have a dual diagnosis, there are rehab centers in Arizona that can provide treatment for both conditions at the same time. These facilities offer integrated, comprehensive care to address and treat all of your mental health concerns.

Your Aetna Arizona plan will provide coverage for some, if not all, of these dual diagnosis treatments. The amount of coverage provided depends on your specific plan.

How Long Does Aetna of Arizona Insurance Cover Inpatient Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs?

How long you stay in an inpatient alcohol and drug rehab program depends on your treatment needs. The substances you’re using, the severity of your substance use and addiction, dual diagnosis status, and your personal preferences are all factors that are considered when determining how long you should be in treatment.

When you enter treatment, staying and completing your program can help set you up for success and long-term recovery. Research shows that people who stay in treatment for 3 months or longer have better outcomes—improved chances of long-term sobriety and an overall improved sense of well-being. 14, bullet 5

How long your insurance plan will provide coverage depends on the plan you have. Call the number on the back of your insurance card to speak with someone at Aetna to learn more about your plan’s coverage for inpatient rehab, including how long coverage is provided.

What if My Aetna of Arizona Policy Does Not Cover an Inpatient Drug Rehab Program?

As an Aetna Arizona member, at least some of the costs of your stay in an inpatient drug rehab program will be covered by your health insurance plan. You should anticipate some out-of-pocket expenses for treatment, no matter what type of plan you have. These expenses include meeting your deductible and any copays and coinsurance you are responsible for paying.

If you require financial assistance to cover your share of treatment costs, there are options to help you pay, including:

  • Fundraising and crowdfunding. Your family members and friends may want to show their support while you are in rehab and may provide financial assistance.
  • Financing options and payment plans. Many rehab facilities allow you to pay back your costs over time.
  • Scholarships and grants. Rehab facilities as well as some local government agencies provide scholarships and grants to individuals who can demonstrate a financial need.

Getting treatment now is the most important step in your life — the finances can be worked out. Knowing your insurance plan will at least cover some of the costs of your inpatient rehab stay should help give you peace of mind.

Aetna of Arizona In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Inpatient Drug Rehab Centers

As you consider your inpatient drug rehab center options, it’s important to look for a rehab facility that is in-network with Aetna.

Rehab centers that are in-network with Aetna have an agreement with the insurance provider to offer all addiction treatments and services at a discounted rate. This means that getting insurance coverage at these facilities should go smoothly, and your out-of-pocket expenses will be considerably lower.

Out-of-network providers do not have an agreement with Aetna and therefore do not provide addiction treatments at a discounted rate. If you attend rehab at an out-of-network provider, your plan may cover less of the costs or none at all, depending on the restrictions of your plan.

Call the number on the back of your insurance card to ask for referrals to in-network rehab centers. You can also call the rehab center directly to ask if they are in-network with Banner|Aetna.
