Aetna North Carolina: Rehab & Detox Centers in NC That Take Aetna Insurance

Commonly referred to as the Tar Heel State (and also The Old North State), North Carolina became the 12th state of the United States on November 21, 1789.1, slide 4, 2 The state is famous for many things, including the world’s largest private home—the 250-room Biltmore Estate located in Asheville—and being the site of the Wright brothers’ first successful flight of a mechanically propelled airplane on December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk.1, slide 7 and 6 respectively

Aside from these fun facts about the history of the state, North Carolina is known for being the 9th most populous state in the country, with approximately 10,457,177 people calling it home.3 What’s more, the nation’s 14th most populous city in the country is none other than the capital of North CarolinaCharlotte—home to 925,290 people.4, Table 1 line 14 The next largest city in North Carolina is Raleigh, which is home to 488,334 people and is the 40th-largest city in the United States.4, Table 1 line 40

This state, similar to every other state in the country, is facing a serious epidemic of drug overdose deaths. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported that an average of 9 North Carolinians died each day from a drug overdose in 2020—a 40% increase in deaths from 2019.5, first para

The data captured showed that among 3 surveyed racial groups, the rate of overdose deaths from 2019 to 2020 in North Carolina increased by 32% in white residents, 66% in African American residents, and 93% in American Indian/Indigenous residents.5, Overdose Death Rates by Year and Race. *Deaths per 100,000 residents; Non-Hispanic

Among North Carolinians 12 or older, during 2017 to 2019, 6.5% (562,000 people) reported past-year substance use disorder, 4.7% (405,000 people) reported past-year alcohol use disorder, 2.7% (232,000 people) reported past-year illicit drug use, and 3.5% (300,000 people) reported past-year prescription pain reliever misuse.6, pgs 26, 25,24 and 22 Of those receiving treatment for substance use disorder, in a single-day count in March 2019, 49,520 people were enrolled in a program.6, pg 27

What these statistics illustrate is that those who are struggling with addiction are not alone—and many are getting treatment for their addiction. Finding rehabs in NC, particularly NC detox centers or NC drug rehabilitation centers, or rehabs that take insurance in North Carolina can feel overwhelming. But many can use their insurance, including Aetna North Carolina plans, to finance rehab, as plans may help to cover the costs of treatment.

To find out how many of the rehabs in NC, including the 3 state-facilitated Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Centers are in-network with Aetna, you’ll need to call the number on the back of your insurance card or enter your plan information into Aetna’s North Carolina Provider Search.10, 11

  • Inpatient programs. With an inpatient program, a patient typically remains at the facility to receive around-the-clock medical supervision and care for a set amount of time, which can range from days to months.12, Pg 8, “What types of treatment programs are available?” Para 2, 13, pg 8, para 1
  • Outpatient programs. With an outpatient program, a patient would typically go to 1 or 2 visits per week at a facility, but they can return home after the visit is completed.12, Pg 10, Para 2
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOP). A patient that is in an IOP typically attends a minimum number of hours of treatment each week without staying overnight.12, Pg 10, Para 3

Aetna North Carolina In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Inpatient Drug Rehab Centers

Knowing the difference between what an in- and out-of-network provider is can help you keep your healthcare costs as low as possible. This is because an in-network provider is one that has been contracted with Aetna to provide services to covered members at pre-negotiated rates, which are generally lower charges than what a non-covered member would pay.14 Depending on the plan you have, your Aetna plan may not cover any costs associated with out-of-network providers.
