Does BCBS of Illinois insurance Cover Inpatient Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers?

If you or a loved one struggles with drug or alcohol addiction, a natural step to recovery is to seek care at a reputable rehab center. Of course, treatment often comes at a cost. Fortunately, if you have Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance in Illinois, you may be able to obtain rehab services at an affordable cost.

BCBS is a nationwide insurance provider, and all 50 states across the country offer BCBS insurance plans.1 In fact, approximately 1 in 3 Americans (more than 110 million people) are covered by a type of BCBS plan.2 Your BCBS will likely cover inpatient alcohol and drug rehab centers in some capacity. What exactly is covered by your plan will vary greatly upon the type of plan you have, your location, and where you seek care. To find out more about your specific levels of benefits and coverage, you can call the number on the back of your insurance card. Or, if you’re not comfortable looking on your own, rehab centers may be able to check your coverage for you if you provide your insurance information to them. Any American Addiction Centers (AAC) facility will be able to do this for you—just reach out via phone or chat. And, as a bonus, you can submit basic insurance information on many AAC facility pages to verify your benefits and coverage immediately online.

What Is BCBS of Illinois?

BCBS of Illinois is one of many subsidiaries of the parent company Blue Cross Blue Shield. Since 1929, the company has provided health insurance.2 The company now works with more than 1.7 million doctors and hospitals across the country to form its network of in-network providers.2 This network of providers is larger than any other insurer’s network. Approximately 96% of hospitals and 93% of physicians nationwide have partnered with BCBS to provide quality care to covered patients.3 (PARTNERSHIPS IN ALL 50 STATES)

Given the vast network of providers that BCBS boasts, it’s safe to assume that you will be able to find quality, covered care near you in Illinois. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Find Treatment tool, there are hundreds of treatment facilities in Illinois.4 You can call a treatment center and ask a staff member to help you verify your insurance benefits, or you can call the number on the back of your BCBS IL card to speak to a representative for assistance in finding an approved facility.

How Much Does BCBS of Illinois Cover (Addiction Treatment)?

How much your BCBS of Illinois plan will cover in regards to addiction treatment will vary greatly based upon the plan you have and where you receive care. For example, some top-tier plans will cover 100% of your treatment costs at an in-network facility, whereas a lower-tier plan may only cover 75% of the treatment costs. It is important to review your benefits and coverage carefully to understand what your plan covers and whether there are cost-sharing requirements (e.g., copays, deductibles, or coinsurance) and provider requirements.

However, despite the variance in levels of coverage, your plan likely provides coverage in some capacity for common treatment methods, including the following:5

  • Community-based alcohol or drug treatments
    • Inpatient or residential rehab
    • Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)
    • Outpatient rehab or therapy
    • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
  • Community-based behavioral health services
    • Inpatient or residential rehab
    • Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)
    • Outpatient rehab or therapy
    • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
  • Behavioral Health Mobile Crisis Response services, including hotline calls
    • 1-800-345-9049 (TTY/TDD: 711)

Be sure to check with a BCBIL representative or your rehab facility to ensure that a service is covered before seeking treatment unless it is an emergency. This can help you avoid surprise out-of-pocket medical costs.

Does Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Provide Coverage for Mental Health Facilities?

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is a federal health care reform law, all health plans, including your BCBSIL plan, must provide some level of coverage for mental health care services. Specifically, your BCBSIL plan must provide coverage for substance use disorder treatment, inpatient mental and behavioral health disorder treatment, and behavioral health treatment.6

This federal mandate helps to make sure that you can get the care you need, whether you’re struggling with substance use, a mental or behavioral health disorder—or both (known as a co-occurring disorder). According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), 7.7 million Americans have a co-occurring disorder, which means that you’re not alone if you too are struggling with substance use and mental health disorder.7 To effectively treat a co-occurring disorder, both disorders must be treated together, which, thanks to the ACA, is a feasible task to accomplish.

How Long Does BCBS of Illinois Insurance Cover Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs?

The length of coverage under BCBS of Illinois will vary based on the plan you have. There is not a standardized length of treatment that is covered across all BCBS of Illinois insurance plans. The best thing you can do to find out how long your plan will cover treatment is to look up your own plan information by logging on to the BCBS IL member portal, or by calling the number on the back of your insurance card.

It’s also important to note that every person’s path to recovery will look different and that your treatment will likely vary from someone else’s. While there is not a standardized approach to treatment, it’s commonly believed by experts that longer treatment times are typically considered more effective. The NIDA states, citing research, that treatment for addiction or co-occurring disorders should last at least 3 months to be as effective as possible.8, (Numbered list number 5)

It’s up to your provider to determine the most appropriate treatment for you and your unique situation. Remember, every person’s path to recovery is different.

What if My BCBS of Illinois Policy Does Not Cover an Inpatient Drug Rehab Program?

If your BCBS of Illinois plan doesn’t cover an inpatient drug rehab program, you may be responsible for paying for the costs of rehab out of pocket. Depending on the rehab center you choose to attend, you may have a variety of options available to you to help offset these out-of-pocket costs. For example, some centers offer special financing opportunities that you can take advantage of. Others may offer scholarship opportunities that you can apply for to offset the costs of getting care.

You’ll never know if you don’t ask. Remember, the worst that a facility can say is no, they don’t offer financing or scholarship opportunities. At the end of the day, getting the care that you need is the most important thing. Don’t push off getting care, the longer you wait, the more dangerous it is. And, you may need more care the longer you push off getting help, which can make costs climb more.

BCBS of Illinois In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Inpatient Drug Rehab Centers

Knowing the difference between in-network and out-of-network providers can help you keep your health care costs low. An in-network provider is one that works with BCBSIL, and given their expansive network, there are likely many in-network rehab centers near you. In-network providers are typically covered at a higher percentage by your insurance company, which translates into cost savings for you. Out-of-network providers may not be covered at all by your insurance company, and if they are, are covered at a lower percentage, meaning higher out-of-pocket costs for you.
