Does Managed Health Network Insurance Cover Alcohol and Drug Rehab?

Managed Health Network (MHN) is a company that provides workplace solutions to companies.1 “About Us”, Para 1 MHN provides services like behavioral health services and EAPs to over 800 organizations through its parent company, Health Net.1, “About Us”, Para 2, 3, 1 MHN is not a health insurance company, per se, but is an offering of products that are designed to meet the needs of clients.1 “MHN’s Products and Services” With its 40+ years in behavioral health care, MHN, which is licensed under the Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act, uses its nationwide call centers and offices to help affected individuals get the care they need.1, “About Us”, Para 6

Specifically, behavioral health plans, which may include substance use disorder and mental health treatment, provide access to an assessment and referral to the MHN network of 63,000 providers/practitioners and 1,500 hospitals/facilities.1, “MHN’s Products and Services, Bullet 2; “About Us” Para 4 Your specific coverage will depend upon your MHN plan, and it’s not guaranteed that every treatment or center will be covered under your plan. Call the number on the back of your plan card for more information about your specific plan. Or, you can call the desired rehab center and ask if they can check your coverage details.

What Is Managed Health Network?

For over 40 years, MHN has helped employers improve productivity and enhance employees’ lives through its workplace solution offerings.1, About Us While it is not a standard health insurance plan and should not be used as such, it can help members gain access to behavioral health care services.1 “About Us” MHN has a wide provider network and works with the leading behavioral health care organizations.1, “About Us” Paras 4 and 5

Health Net and MHN

MHN is a Health Net company, which means Health Net owns and facilitates MHN.1 Health Net was founded in 1979 and works to provide 3,295 employees and 3 million managed care members with health insurance across the state of California.2, “Health Net Overview” Health Net provides a variety of health insurance plans, including private plans for individuals and families, employer-sponsored plans, and Medicare/Medi-Cali plans.2 “About Us” Para 1

What Will Managed Health Network Insurance Cover?

The exact services that may be covered by your MNH behavioral health plan may vary. Despite this, there are some common treatment methods for addiction rehab that may be recommended for you. These include the following:

  • Inpatient/residential rehab—This type of treatment might include both detox and rehab services, as the patient stays overnight at a facility or hospital for a certain amount of time.3, Pg 14 “What types of treatment programs are available, Para 2
  • Outpatient rehab/therapy—This type of treatment can be offered at a variety of places and the patient will visit the facility for the treatment, but return home in the evening.3, Pg 16, Para 2 Treatment and attendance requirements will vary based on your unique situation.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOP)—This type of outpatient treatment is typically more involved than standard outpatient care and may involve a patient attending care between 9-20 hours per week. 3, Pg 16, Para 3
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHP)—This type of treatment takes place in a hospital or free-standing clinic and typically involves the patient receiving care for 4-8 hours per day, with the patient returning home at the end of the day. 3, Pg 16, Para 1

Be sure to talk to your provider to discuss what types of treatment may be best for you. You can also ask your provider to verify whether your MHN behavioral health plan will cover the costs of treatment.

Does Managed Health Network Insurance Cover Inpatient Mental Health Care Facilities?

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health insurance plans in the United States are required to provide some level of coverage for mental health care and treatment, including treatment for substance use disorders.4, first bulleted list Because MHN is not a health insurance plan, it is not required to provide coverage for such services. However, MHN was created to provide such access for employees and covered members, so it will likely provide some type of coverage for mental health care.1, “MHN’s Products and Services”

Even though MHN isn’t mandated to provide coverage for stand-alone heroin rehab or co-occurring disorder treatment, these plans may help you receive such care. A co-occurring disorder is when someone is experiencing both a mental health and substance use disorder at the same time.5, Para 2

Please include additional information on why a co-occurring disorder needs to be treated in tandem

How Long Does Managed Health Network Insurance Cover Rehab?

Because there are many different MHN behavioral health service plans, and those plans may be designed by employers, there’s no standard length of time that a plan may cover the cost of rehab or related treatments. Be sure to check with your MHN plan representative for more information about your specific behavioral health plan coverage details. You can access this information by calling the number on the back of your insurance card or asking a rehab center staff member to help you verify your benefits and coverage.

What’s more, there’s no single treatment that may be appropriate for every person seeking treatment. Despite these facts, there’s one thing that experts agree on—and that’s the fact that remaining in recovery and treatment for a sufficient time is essential. The research demonstrates that most people recovering from addiction need to be in treatment for at least 3 months to stop or curb their drug use.6, Bullet #5 The best outcomes typically coincide with treatment durations that are longer. 6, Bullet #5

What if My Managed Health Network Policy Does Not Cover Rehab?

It is possible that your MHN behavioral health plan may not fully or partially cover the cost of rehab. If this is the case, you should still receive care. Getting the treatment right now is critical, as delaying care could result in your addiction worsening.

Depending on the rehab center you attend, there may be financing or scholarship opportunities available to you. Be sure to ask rehab center staff if any of these options are available to see if you’d qualify or be able to apply to help offset your out-of-pocket costs.

Managed Health Network In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Rehab Centers

In- and out-of-network facilities will play a large role in your out-of-pocket rehab costs. A network is the term used to refer to the providers, facilities, and suppliers that are contracted with your plan to provide health care services.7 Generally speaking, obtaining care from an in-network provider, or one who is within your plan’s network, is more cost-effective for you. To check whether a provider is within your network, call your MHN representative at the number on the back of your card.

Managed Health Network Plans

Because all MHN plans can be customized to an employer’s needs, there are no explanations of MHN plans. These plans can be purchased as stand-alone offerings or purchased and integrated with a Health Net health insurance plan.8, “Behavioral Health Care”, Para 1 MHN behavioral health programs may include 24/7/365 crisis intervention, therapy sessions, inpatient and outpatient treatment (including PHPs and residential care), and follow-up and aftercare treatment.8, “Behavioral Health Care”, First bulleted list To learn more about what your plan may cover, please contact your Managed Health Network plan representative.
