Specialized Addiction Treatment for Veterans

Veterans may experience higher risks of addiction due to factors like PTSD, physical injuries, depression, and anxiety.1 Compared to the general population, Veterans can be slightly more likely to experience substance use disorders.2,3

Fortunately, there are a number of specialized rehab programs designed specifically for Veterans. These programs can help vets overcome their addiction and get their lives back on track. One such program is Salute to Recovery.4

Specialized Veterans Addiction Rehab Programs

Addiction recovery demands a personalized approach, which is why tailored programs can be powerful tools in the healing journey. Recognizing this, American Addiction Centers (AAC) created Salute to Recovery, a dedicated treatment program for military Veterans.4 This specialized track, offered at our VA Centers of Excellence facilities, offers the unique support and understanding that Veterans deserve.

What Is Salute to Recovery?

Military service can leave lasting physical and emotional marks, sometimes contributing to substance misuse.2,3 At our VA Centers of Excellence understand these challenges, and Salute to Recovery offers specialized tracks, empowering Veterans to heal from past trauma, strengthen their connections with loved ones, and begin to rebuild their lives.4

Our customized, evidence-based approach helps Veterans identify and address the root causes of their addiction, especially those connected to their military experiences. Salute to Recovery uses a “mission-focused” mindset, drawing on strength-based therapy and positive psychology to support Veterans as they navigate mental health concerns, substance use, and the transition back to civilian life.4 Program elements and topics may include:4

  • Stress, depression, and anxiety management strategies
  • Anger management techniques
  • Suicide prevention
  • PTSD treatment
  • In-depth education on addiction
  • Experiential therapies (e.g., yoga, meditation, art therapies)
  • Relapse prevention and discharge planning

The program emphasizes group discussion and collaboration, creating a safe space for Veterans to share experiences, build support networks, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. We also recognize the impact of addiction on families and offer resources and education for loved ones.4

Mission Focused Mindset

The Salute to Recovery program utilizes a unique approach called “The Mission Focused Mindset” to support Veterans in their recovery journey. This method combines strength-based therapy with the principles of positive psychology to empower lasting change.4 Here’s what that means:4

  • Focus on Your Strengths: We recognize that every Veteran brings unique talents and resilience to the table. This program focuses on those strengths, boosting self-esteem and promoting positive thought patterns.
  • Holistic Support for Success: We believe in preparing you for lasting recovery on all levels—mental, physical, and spiritual. This includes developing essential skills to manage triggers and maintain emotional balance.
  • You are in Charge: The Mission Focused Mindset is about putting you in the driver’s seat of your own change. Through this approach, Veterans learn to tap into their inner strength and take ownership of their transformation.

Who Is Eligible for Salute to Recovery

Salute to Recovery welcomes Veterans of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces who are facing challenges with addiction, as well as mental health concerns like PTSD, depression, and anxiety.4
